Garneau takes its name after Laurence Garneau, an early settler in the region. A former employee of Hudson’s Bay Company, Garneau settled the area with his wife and family in the 1870s. Today, Garneau’s boundaries have been expanded to the east, today reaching 107th Street, and also includes some academic areas. Some of the University of Alberta’s student housing, and several houses used by the University’s Greek system are located within Garneau, and the neighbourhood also has within its bounds a number of shops and other commercial businesses along Whyte Avenue, 109th Street, and 112th Street.

Though the University of Alberta continues to develop in the northeast corner of the neighbourhood, the local Garneau community has a reputation for fiercely protecting the remainder of their beloved neighbourhood in order to preserve its history. The Garneau Community League remains in constant contact with both the University of Edmonton and the City itself in order to ensure that developments do not erode the neighbourhood’s historical landmarks.

Today, life in Garneau is a diverse mixture of residential, university, and business lifestyles, resulting in a vibrant, bohemian atmosphere. The major business hub of 109th Street is home to the iconic Garneau Theatre, which was restored to its original historic state in 2009. The theatre regularly shows independent films, art house features, and cult classics. Also on 109th Street is the popular Transcend Coffee Shop, Rosso Pizzeria, and Whimsical Cake Studio, all within a single block – a clear illustration of the breadth and depth of amenities offered by Garneau living.

Elsewhere in Garneau, 88th Avenue is a popular spot housing some of Edmonton’s most popular dining spots, including the Sugar Bowl and the High Level Diner. Garneau is also a haven for cyclists, and the Red Bike Shop is conveniently located on 88th, providing local bicyclers with all they need.

Whyte Avenue is another well known commercial area located in the Garneau area. Plenty of dining, entertainment, and retail businesses are available for locals and visitors here, as well as ample opportunities for employment.

Finally, for the student seeking a unique urban living, Garneu’s proximity to the University of Alberta campus is one of the major factors that has shaped the eclectic face of this community. While 75% of Garneau’s residents are renting, and students abound, Garneau is also a diverse and charming neighbourhood in which to raise a family.
