Avonmore Edmonton Homes for Sale | Real Estate Listings
The Avonmore neighbourhood in Edmonton is named for Algernon William Yelverton, Viscount Avonmore. He was an adventurer and an Irish priest who made a stop in Edmonton on his trip to the Klondike during the gold rush in 1887. It may sound odd to name a community after someone who was just ‘passing through,’ but while he was in Edmonton, ‘My Lord Ave-One-More,’ as he was called, made quite the impression. You see, he carried along in his caravan one of the largest stockpiles of liquor in Alberta. Unfortunately, he wasn’t allowed to sell his stock, as the Klondike was under prohibition at the time. Undaunted, he and the community did what they had to do – they polished off the entire supply in a six-week period. Since everyone loves a good drinking story, Avonmore neighbourhood today bears his name in honor of his visit.

The Homes of Avonmore Edmonton Real Estate For Sale | Edmonton MLS
Mostly developed in the 1950s, homes in Avonmore are largely single-family dwellings. The neighbourhood itself features some convenient commercial areas, with a broader variety of shopping and services at the Bonnie Doon Mall, located nearby.
One of the most prominent features of Avonmore is Mill Creek Ravine, which forms its western boundary. The ravine is a part of the North Saskatchewan River Valley park system, and residents of Avonmore benefit from the excellent vistas and opportunities for outdoor recreation that it provides. In the north, Avonmore is bounded by 76th Avenue, and on the east by 75th street, both major thoroughfares connecting to all that greater Edmonton has to offer.
Perhaps owing to its gold rush roots, Avonmore is home to an ethnically diverse population, and residents range from Canadian to German to Ukrainian to Scottish to English. 75% of Avonmore’s population identified with more than one ethnic group, according to the Federal Census data from 2001.
Families looking for a good, mature community in which to raise children will enjoy the nearby Avonmore School, a school for students from elementary school through junior high. Avonmore School is also home to the Nellie McClung Program for Junior High Girls, offering educational programming focusing on leadership, teamwork, citizenship, and empowering girls for a bright, strong future.
The Avonmore residents also have a say in how the community is run. The neighbourhood is represented by the Community League, which was established in 1957 and proves the neighbourhood with a community hall, outdoor skating rink, and the opportunity to participate in restoration and other municipal decisions impacting the community.
