Find your Ideal Edmonton Home in the Community of Belgravia
The neighbourhood today known as Belgravia started as the southwest terminus of the old streetcar line, the Edmonton Radial Railway. The development of the neighbourhood began in 1912 with the construction of the Tegler Building (named for its owner Robert Tegler), which has since been demolished. Still, the addition of the building in 1912 secured Belgravia’s place on the Edmonton real estate market, and today homes for sale in Belgravia, which takes its own name from a fashionable area of Victorian London, are some of the most sought-after houses in Edmonton. More On Beligravia Edmonton Real Estate For Sale | MLS Edmonton
Belgravia looks over the North Saskatchewan River valley to the west and is a relatively isolated neighbourhood due to its location, nestled in the river valley and ravine system. Homes for sale in Belgravia largely consist of bungalows, semi-bungalows, and 2-story single family homes, though along the boundary of the neighbourhood one can find high density housing such as apartments and condominiums. A mature neighbourhood, most of Belgravia’s development occurred prior to 1960, but more recent construction can be found. Notably, a former Workers Compensation Board site in Belgravia’s south end was redeveloped as residential real estate as recently as the early 2000s.
Homes in Belgravia are predominantly owner-occupied, and the majority are single-family homes. Families enjoy a quiet, community-minded lifestyle in Belgravia, with the average household size in the neighbourhood being about 2.4 people. To the northeast, the University of Alberta is located closeby, with the neighbourhoods of Windsor Park, Parkallen, and Grandview Heights also in close proximity. As a result, Belgravia living feels a good amount quieter and more suburban than some more central neighbourhoods in Edmonton.
The City of Edmonton’s LRT line was extended to Belgravia’s eastern edge in 2008, with the addition of a new stop on 76th Avenue, which connected the transit system to the University of Alberta’s south campus. Belgravia is also well served by bus connections, but the addition of LRT access means that residents of this quiet, low-density community have easier access to the major areas of Edmonton, making this community a perfect choice for students or commuters who want to live outside the hustle and bustle of the City.
Residents of Belgravia are typically long-term residents, making the neighbourhood a very stable community to move into. Residents benefit from easy access to the River Valley, the nearby University of Alberta Hospital in addition to the University’s north and south campuses, and the well known and popular commercial area on Whyte Avenue. In addition, there is a small shopping area inside Belgravia itself, located on 76th Avenue.
