More On King Edward Park Edmonton Real Estate For Sale | MLS Edmonton
The history of development in King Edward Park is reflective of the overall pattern of growth of Edmonton. The portion of the current neighbourhood west of 91st Street was annexed by Strathcona in 1907, and later became part of Edmonton after the two cities amalgamated in 1912. The part of the neighbourhood lying east of 91st Street, to 75th Street was annexed in 1913 by Edmonton, but most of the development in this area did not happen until the 1950s. Then, as the city continued to grow, the portion of King Edward Park east of 75th Street was added in 1960.
Homes for sale in King Edward Park are, as one would expect for a neighbourhood developed largely in the 1950s and 1960s, predominantly single family detached houses, with just over half the real estate in King Edward Park falling into this category. A quarter of the neighbourhood’s housing is in low-rise apartment buildings, with the remainder made up by row housing and semi-detached homes.
The oldest structures in the neighbourhood, as one would expect given its pattern of growth, are those on the western side of the community. In the neighbourhood’s early years, it is said that early residents could hear the whistles of the trains winding their way through nearby Mill Creek Ravine. Today, those railroad tracks have become paths and trails connecting Mill Creek Raving to the park system of North Saskatchewan River Valley, giving home buyers in King Edward Park access to some of the outdoor recreation that Edmonton residents love.
King Edward Park contains two schools: Donnan Elementary Junior High, which is a part of the Edmonton Public School System, and St. James Catholic Elementary, operated by the Catholic School System in Edmonton. Retail businesses and other services can be found at the regional shopping hub nearby, the Bonnie Doon Mall. Additional commercial areas can be found along 82nd Avenue and east of 75th Street.
The neighbourhood of King Edward Park was named, as one may have guessed, for King Edward VII, Queen Victoria’s eldest son. Unlike many modern Edmonton neighbourhoods, however, it received this name before it was annexed, and it has remained unchanged since the turn of the 20th century.
