Spotlight On: Cloverdale Edmonton Real Estate For Sale | Edmonton MLS

The development of Cloverdale has relied heavily on the development of transportation facilities. In the late 19th century, the North Saskatchewan River was widely used in the fur trade, and the completion of the Low Level Bridge in 1902 helped to connect travelers and traders in the area. The Yukon, Pacific and Edmonton Railways all arrived shortly after, connecting Edmonton and Strathcona via rail through the Mill Creek Ravine – across the Low Level Bridge. The bridge was later used as part of the streetcar system in Edmonton.

Since the turn of the 20th century, the provincial and municipal governments have taken steps to protect the River Valley and preserve it for the enjoyment of all Albertans, and of Edmontonians in particular. The residents of Edmonton almost universally agree that the River Valley is one of the best parts of living in Edmonton, and the City itself recognizes that River Valley communities like Cloverdale have a vital role to play in the city’s development.

Most of the neighbourhood today known as Cloverdale was annexed in 1907 by Strathcona, which merged with Edmonton in 1912. Soon after, Cloverdale established itself as an idyllic community with a school, shops, industry, and churches. Over the years, one of the major focuses of land use in Cloverdale has been dedicated to outdoor recreational spaces, and locales like beautiful Gallagher Park today echo that commitment.

Today, the community of Cloverdale is made up of almost 500 homes and a population of about 850, making Cloverdale one of the smaller neighbourhoods of Edmonton in terms of population. However, what it lacks in people, it makes up for in points of interest, including the aforementioned Gallagher Park, which is home to the beloved annual Edmonton Folk Festival. Founded in 1980 by a small group of folk musicians in a rented school bus, the Folk Festival today is an international entertainment event. For four days every August, Gallagher Park’s beautiful hillside is filled with blankets, folding chairs, artists, and attendees taking in the spectacular musical celebration.

In addition, the Edmonton Ski Club has been a fixture of Cloverdale since 1911. It sits on the beautiful natural slopes Connors Hill and today hosts skiing and snowboarding in the winter, while in the summer offers come of the prime spots to view the Folk Festival. One of the most iconic parts of the neighbourhood is the Muttart Conservatory, officially recognized as part of the Edmonton Skyline. This four-pyramid structure is distinctive and striking in and of itself, and inside it displays a variety of flora from across the world.
